The Compassion Project is a parent workshop on adolescent mental health and dialectical behavioral therapy.  It is

  • 6-week virtual workshop
  • Tuesdays 5:30-7 pm October 13th, 20th, 27th, and November 3rd, 10th, 17th
  • Open to all DJUSD parents/staff of 7th-12th graders
  • Spanish translation offered

Topics Covered
Week 1- Typical adolescent behavior

Week 2- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder Week 3- Bipolar and depressive disorder
Week 4- Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Week 5- Risk taking behaviors and addiction
Week 6- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Workshop Format 
Each session has a specific focus and is broken into two parts: lecture and skill learning/practice.
For the first half of the session, an expert will present information on the topic of the night. Then DBT skills will be introduced that correlate to that topic.
--The workshop format allows for the participants to have input in what they want to learn.
--The facilitators create a safe and comfortable environment for participants.

Program Goals
  1. Raise awareness of psychological disorders in children and adolescents and reduce stigma.
  2. Provide participants with the information necessary to understand and meet their children's psychological needs and provide  roper support.
  3. Provide participants with the information necessary to feel  comfortable talking about mental health and to effectively support students.
  4. Introduce participants to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and give them the skills necessary to execute DBT outside of the workshop. *DBT is a cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses on four skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation
